FAQ
Q: What is a Planetarium?A: A planetarium is a place where movements of the stars and heavenly bodies are replicated, and images of the sky, planets, and constellations can be projected on a large dome for viewing and study.
Q: What is the difference between a Planetarium and an Observatory?
A: At a Planetarium, images are replicated. At an observatory, stars are viewed directly, or with a telescope. At the Steele Planetarium images are projected on a 14' dome for viewing.
Q: What are some of the benefits to seeing stars 'under the dome'?
A: Observation of the stars can be done anytime, avoiding bad weather or clouds obstructing the view. No waiting for that rare moment to view special astronomical phenomena! Many people can view the stars at the same time and have special features pointed out for study. The magnitude can be increased for ease of viewing, and most latitudes can be replicated for any season.
Q: What makes the Steele Planetarium special?
A: The Planetarium programs at Steele are connected with the science curriculum of DPS, and meet the State Standards. The shows are all age appropriate for ECE through Adults, and the resource materials are abundant. Planetarium shows can be customized to meet a group's special needs.
